All change at the Mail

Paul Dacre, the long-serving editor of the Daily Mail, announced that he will be stepping down in August. The news left tongues wagging as to who his replacement for a plum job in journalism would be, but within days Geordie Greig was confirmed as taking over. During his tenure Dacre has proved a divisive figure, perceived to hold significant political clout. He is an ardent Brexiteer who regularly pressed the Government on topics like immigration and his editorship arguably helped deliver a Leave vote two years ago; Greig, currently editor of the Mail on Sunday, is pro Remain, signalling a potentially significant shift in the UK media landscape. Dacre will however be keeping a close eye on his old beat, staying on as Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Associated Newspapers, the Daily Mail’s publisher.

Peston… on Wednesday

Robert Peston’s flagship Sunday programme will no longer be broadcast on the weekend, and will instead air on Wednesday evenings after ITV’s News at Ten, allowing it to react to PMQs and other major developments in Parliament. The reformatted programme, is to be called simply “Peston”. The presenter said he “could not be more pleased and excited” with the new timetable, but the Guardian noted that the show had struggled to attract viewers in its competitive timeslot.

Transport campaign sets off

Rail chaos led some 20 northern newspapers to join forces and devote their front pages to the crisis and demand better from the Government. Papers from ordinarily rival newsgroups including Johnston Press, Reach and Newsquest backed the One North campaign urging ministers to fix the region’s “broken” transport network, after a fortnight of chaos caused by a switchover to new timetables, with 25 papers running the same opinion piece. Several papers, including the Lancashire Post and the Yorkshire Evening Post opted for the headline “Off the rails.”

Blue Planet effect

Media coverage of Blue Planet II and the debate around single-use plastics has had an impact on children, according to Oxford University Press. The publisher examined the words used in a series of stories submitted to a children’s writing contest. The word plastic came up 3,359 times across the 134,790 stories that were entered.

Media Moves 

Oliver Shah has been appointed business editor for The Sunday Times, a role he will begin on July 7th. He tweeted that he was “excited and honoured” to be taking over from Iain Dey. Shah is currently the paper’s City Editor.

The Financial Times’ world trade editor, Shawn Donnen, is leaving the paper to join Bloomberg’s economics team.
